Police on Tuesday April 16, 2019 charged a 15-year-old Palatine High School freshman with felony charges of Unlawful Use of a Weapon on school grounds and Disorderly Conduct following the discovery of a gun that was concealed in his belongings. The gun was discovered Tuesday morning at Palatine High School.
The student told school officials and investigators that he possessed the gun in school because he’d been receiving threats. Palatine police Wednesday said they were continuing to investigate those threats.
Palatine police have not publicly identified the freshman student, who was transported in custody to the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago to await a court hearing.
Palatine High School Principal Tony Medina sent a letter to parents, explaining that school officials were working closely with police to ensure the student does not return to Palatine High School.
Medina’s letter credited “two alert staff members” with finding the gun wrapped in a sweatshirt the student left behind at his desk at about 11:00 a.m. Tuesday.
