CHICAGO FIRE DEPARTMENT AMBULANCE 78 WAS ALSO HIT BY GUNFIRE AT THE SCENE AT 59TH STREET AND KEDZIE AVENUE
Candice Dickerson, 36, was with her sons inside a MetroPCS store when she was shot and killed — possibly by two male offenders standing on the corner outside the store.
An innocent mother of three was shot and killed Friday night in front of her sons while shopping for a cellphone inside a cellphone store at 59th Street and Kedzie Avenue on the city’s Southwest Side Friday night.
Chicago police, firefighters and paramedics responded about 7:30 p.m. to a report of a person shot. Candice Dickerson, 36, was with her sons inside a MetroPCS store at 5900 South Kedzie Avenue when she was hit by a bullet fired from a gun outside the store.
Police say she was standing at the counter when a bullet came through the window and struck her in the back of the head.
Dickerson was taken to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Christ Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Dickerson, a pharmacy technician, was buying one of her son’s a cellphone for getting a good grade on a project when she was shot.
Her son Jacarey, 12, who witnessed the shooting said, “She was trying to get down, but they shot her before she got down and she started bleeding.” Jacarey told ABC & Chicago reporter Diane Pathieu his mother was crying and kept trying to get up until the ambulance arrived. “I was scared,” Jacarey said.
“I thought she was very brave. I thought that maybe she’d be able to survive, but when we got to the hospital, she did not survive,” said Jacarey.
Witnesses report they saw two male offenders firing shots at the corner, and security cameras may have captured an image of the shooters.
Chicago Fire Department Ambulance 78 driving in the area was also hit by gunfire, and police at the the shooting scene involving Candice Dickerson were also investigating the shooting involving Ambulance 78.
