Accurate snow accumulation forecast on grassy surfaces is a difficult forecast today. Snow is not likely to accumulate on pavement.
Significant precipitation for Chicagoland is connected to an approaching mid-upper level low and associated TROWAL (short for TROugh of Warm air ALoft). Some brief snow showers passed through Arlington Heights about 6:30 a.m., but there was no accumulation. Air temperature was well above freezing overnight at about 38°F, and the low this morning was about 35°F. Temperatures of 35°F to 36°F are expected to hold all the way through until the precipitation period ends at about midnight Sunday/Monday. If snow accumulates at all in Arlington Heights, it will be very wet and slushy, and accumulate to about 1 to 1.3 inch by 6:00 p.m. Sunday (on grass, not pavement). At 7:17 am., WGN is reporting the possibility of several inches of snow on grassy surfaces in some areas in northern Chicagoland.
At 7:40 a.m. there is mixed rain and snow. Heavier snow showers will begin in Arlington Heights by about 8:30 a.m.
Weather Radar (also nexrad.chgowx.com) shows a large area of precipitation with snow moving toward the northwest suburbs from west-central Illinois at 7:25 a.m.
There won’t be much, if any, snow south and east of I-55.
