Notre-Dame has been saved from total destruction after a blaze ripped through the cathedral, French fire services have said.
Firefighters in Paris responded about 6:40 p.m. CEST Monday April 15, 2019 to a report a fire that broke out on the roof — possibly closer to the rear of the building where scaffolding was built up during renovation of the spire.
Eventually, by about 7:49 p.m. the famous 300-foot spire collapsed. Also, the famous organ, which was recently restored, was destroyed inside as part of the significant damage that occurred to much of the cathedral. At one point the primary structure of the cathedral, including both of the towers, and one-third of the roof were reported to be safe from direct damage by fire. A final report will is anticipated with daylight Tuesday.
One firefighter was reported seriously injured. Firefighters were working for hours after the fire started, removing artwork from the cathedral, while at risk of falling debris and dripping, melting lead.
Thousands of people stood on the banks of the Siene River as the Notre-Dame cathedral of Paris burned.
In preparation for the current renovation, stone, copper, and bronze statues, including statues of the twelve Apostles, had been removed a few days before the fire.
Construction of the cathedral began in 1160, lasting for 100 years until 1260 when the construction was mostly completed.
The Notre-Dame cathedral was in the process of being renovated when a fire broke out Monday night in Paris.
