LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Police and firefighters in Lakewood, Colorado responded about 4:50 p.m. Thursday April 25, 2019 to a report of a major crash with fire involving multiple vehicles. One person was reported dead, and several others injured. Interstate 70 was shut down in both directions near Denver West Colorado Mills Parkway in Lakewood.
The crash and fire was located in the eastbound lanes, but both directions of the highway are closed. The Denver West Colorado Mills Parkway bridge over the interstate was also shut down.
The crash occurred when a semitrailer traveling at a high rate of speed on the eastbound side of the highway collided with other vehicles, starting a chain reaction crash and fire. The driver of that semi-trailer high-speed truck survived. Six people were transported to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood. The hospital confirmed they are treating three male patients and three female patients. One male patient is in good condition; the other five patients are listed in fair condition.
Initially the identity of the person killed was not released.
Police estimated that 12 passenger vehicles and three semi-trailer trucks were involved in the crash. I-70 may remain closed through the Friday morning commute, according to police. Lakewood police reported there is damage to both the bridge over I-70 and the I-70 roadway surface due to the fire. The Colorado Department of Transportation is at the scene evaluating the stability of the bridge.
West Metro Fire Rescue crews were still on scene at 6:30 p.m.
West Metro Fire Rescue, Lakewood Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and Colorado State Patrol troopers were all on the scene.
