Starting with Los Angeles, Amazon.com Inc. is planning to open dozens of grocery stores in several major U.S. cities, according to inside sources.
Amazon may have two stores in Los Angeles by the end of the year, and continue to open dozens of stores in U.S. cities.
The news come two days after Amazon announced Whole Foods, owned by Amazon, is eliminating the Whole Foods Market 365 store concept. Reports indicated the 365 locations will remain open as smaller-sized Whole Foods stores. However, with this new announcement regarding an Amazon grocery chain, perhaps some of the 365 stores will be Amazon grocery stores.
Whole Foods had big plans for the 365 stores, built to appeal to younger customers, when they were announced in May 2015.
Amazon merged with Whole Foods in August 2017.
Whole Foods Planning Streamlined Stores for 2016 with Lower Prices for Targeted at Millennials. As of March 2019 there were only 12 stores nationwide in California, Georgia, Ohio, New York, Oregon and Texas.
