Two people were shot outside a River North nightclub, one of them fatally, after a brawl early Friday. Mike Puccinelli reported for CBS Chicago.
Chicago police, firefighters, and paramedics responded just after midnight Friday, March 8, 2019 to a report of a fight and a shooting outside Sound Bar, 226 West Ontario Street in the River North Neighborhood.
Police said a group of about 15 people were fighting on the sidewalk at the mouth of the alley at the corner of Franklin and Ontario, outside Sound Bar. A male offender in the group pulled out a handgun and started shooting.
A 28-year-old man who works at the club was shot, and was transported to Level I Trauma Center Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified him as Thurman Bailey, of the Bronzeville neighborhood. He was later confirmed to be a security guard that was working at Sound Bar.
A 58-year-old man who is associated with Sound Bar was also shot in the leg and arm, but he took himself to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. His condition was described as “stabilized.”
Initially, community activist and Crisis Responder Andrew Holmes told CBS Chicago’s told CBS Chicago’s Mike Puccinelli, “One [victim] may be the bouncer, or maybe the manager, but we’re getting information that it may be the bouncer. Hopefully with the surveillance footage that surrounds this area, it could shed some light on who the individual was that discharged that weapon and took off from here.”
Following the shooting, police were seen leading several people away from the area in handcuffs, but CBS Chicago reports that police said they have no suspects, and no one was in custody.
A large crowd was inside Sound Bar for a live performance by Sevyn Streeter, who is a well known singer and songwriter in the R&B, pop and soul world — best known for being a member of the girl groups TG4 and RichGirl where she was known as Se7en. She’s also written songs for Alicia Keys, Ariana Grande, Brandy, Chris Brown, Fantasia, K. Michelle, Kelly Rowland, Tamar Braxton, Trey Songz, and Usher.
A shooting outside Sound Bar nightclub left bouncer Thurman “Thurminator” Bailey dead early Friday morning, after a brawl on the sidewalk erupted into gunfire. CBS 2’s Mike Puccinelli reports.
