A McHenry County Sheriff’s Officer part of the US Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force was shot by the subject of a warrant at an Extended Stay America, 747 N. Bell School Road in Rockford, Thursday March 7, 2019 about 9:15 a.m.
Initially police investigators believe there were shots fired inside the hotel room, and then there were shots fired outside in the parking lot. Police say the McHenry County Sheriff’s Officer was shot in the parking lot. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Officer was transported to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
The McHenry County sheriff’s officer was at the Rockford hotel with a U.S. Marshals fugitive task force, serving a warrant on Floyd E. Brown, 39, who was wanted on warrants out of Sangamon County, Champaign County, McClean County, and was also wanted on an IDOC probation violation warrant. Police said they were unaware whether the suspect had any connections to the Rockford area.
Police say no law enforcement agent fired any rounds — as far as they know early in the investigation.

A female acquaintance was also shot and was extracted from the hotel room by law enforcement. She sustained a gunshot wound when she was hit by the a shot from the suspect’s weapon.
Initially police were not sure whether the suspect fled the scene or not.
Brown, who resides in the Bloomington, Springfield area, fled in a silver or light blue Mercury Grand Marquis. A wide area police alert stated the suspect may be armed with an AK-47.
A SWAT vehicle spotted the suspect’s vehicle fleeing the scene and a high-speed chase began southbound on I-39 to southbound I-55. The pursuit reached speeds at speeds up to 100 MPH and ended when the suspect crashed his vehicle on the north side of I-55 in a ditch and creek between Bloomington and Lincoln, Illinois. The suspect’s vehicle may have hit a few cars while fleeing police.
I-55 was shut down in both directions after the crash. Police surround the suspect’s vehicle.
The suspect refused to leave his car and appeared to be attempting to exit the vehicle a few times. The suspect was spotted with a rifle when he was in the car — believed to be a silver or light blue Mercury Marquis.
A SWAT team and negotiation team were dispatched to the scene as all lanes of I-55 were shut down. As of 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2019 the police are involved with the suspect in a barricaded suspect scenario.
A warrant for Attempted Murder is active until the suspect is in custody. The suspect is presumed innocent, but if he is convicted he would be sentenced a minimum of 20 years up to 80 years or life in prison.
Hotel guests were evacuated to Giovanni’s Restaurant & Convention Center across the street at 610 North Bell School Road in Rockford.
