Lake Zurich police responded to a car vs tree crash about 6:20 p.m. Thursday March 21, 2019 near Cedar Street and Prairie Lane in the Heatherleigh subdivision of Lake Zurich.

Lake Zurich police say Village Board Trustee Jim Beaudoin was driving west on Cedar Street and attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Prairie Lane. His turn was too wide, and his gray Audi A4 left the roadway, ran over a “No Outlet” sign and hit a tree.

According to statements reported to police by several witnesses with names redacted from the report, Beaudoin got out of his car, surveyed the damage and threw some of the debris into the back of his Audi A4. He placed the No Outlet sign, which became detached from its post, into the back seat of his car.

One witness in the report said that Beaudoin threw his hands in the air and appeared to be talking to himself, and another witness said he looked stressed.

Beaudoin walked away from the vehicle before a Lake Zurich police officer arrived on the scene and found no driver with the crashed Audi. A resident gave police a description of Beaudoin, and police found him near the intersection of Prairie Lane and Dunhill Drive, not far from Beaudoin’s house.

In the police report Beaudoin’s response to the police officer’s question about what happened was redacted from the officer’s police report. Beaudoin declined and ambulance. The officer reported he smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Beaudoin’s breath as he spoke.

A second police officer asked Beaudoin to perform a field sobriety test. Details of the field test and Beaudoin’s verbal response to the request to perform the field sobriety test were also redacted from the police report.

Beaudoin was told by police on the scene that based on information gathered about the crash, witness statements, physical evidence at the scene, his physical condition and the results of the field sobriety test; he was under arrest, suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Lake Zurich Trustee Jim Beaudoin was arrested and transported to police headquarters. His vehicle was towed to a police holding area.

Beaudoin was cited for 1) driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and 2) for failing to reduce speed to avoid a traffic crash. He was released about 8:15 p.m. Thursday on a $3,000 personal recognizance bond. Beaudoin is scheduled for the Lake County Waukegan Court House on April 23, 2019.

Beaudoin has been on the Lake Zurich village board since 2013.
