An Illinois state trooper was killed in a crash about 1:45 p.m. Thursday March 28, 2019 on US 20 northeast of Freeport and west of Rockford, Illinois [LIVE TRAFFIC MAP].
Trooper Brook Jones-Story had pulled over a semi-trailer truck on the westbound shoulder of U.S. Route 20 just west of State Route 75, and was inspecting the commercial vehicle, when her police vehicle was hit, the vehicle she was inspecting was hit, and she was hit as a pedestrian by another semi-trailer truck. Her police vehicle ignited after impact. The truck that hit her while she was outside her vehicle also burned. The truck and the trailer were consumed by fire. Also the truck that had been stopped ignited. The cab of the stopped truck burned, but the trailer did not burn. The truck fires and a field fire along the side of the road were extinguished by Freeport firefighters.
The condition of the two truck drivers were initially unknown.
Trooper Brooke Jones-Story was a 12-year veteran of the Illinois State Police District 16 in Pecatonica.
