One gunman live-streamed footage of his rampage to Facebook, captured with a head-mounted camera. The video showed him firing indiscriminately at men, women and children from close range inside the Al-Noor mosque (BBC is a British public broadcast service).
At least 49 people have been killed, and 48 seriously injured, after mass shootings at two mosques in the Christchurch, New Zealand about 1:40 p.m. Local Time in Christchurch (current time Christchurch). One of the 49 victims died at a hospital.
New Zealand police say they have arrested four people. One male offender has already been arrested, and two other male offenders and a female offender are also in custody.
The attack, described as coordinated and meticulously planned, appears to be connected to anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant ideology. A social media account with the name “Brenton Tarrant” believed to belong to one of the attackers featured a link to an 87-page manifesto filled with anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim information.The social media account also published a live-stream of the attack of Muslim worshipers. Forty-one people were shot and killed at the al Noor mosque, and seven were killed at the Linwood Islamic Centre.
One suspect was arrested after the suspect’s SUV was rammed by a police vehicle, and was removed from the SUV on Brougham Street.
Several weapons were recovered and two improvised explosive devices strapped to a vehicle were secured and recovered.
One of the guns that was displayed during the live stream had white lettering with dates of historic Christian battles with names of well-known far right extremists, according to a Sky News report. A military march, identified by the Sky News report, as the British Grenadiers March was playing in the background during part of the live stream video.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the attack as an “unprecedented act of violence” and called it “one of New Zealand’s darkest days.” She said diversity kindness and compass and refuge for those who need it, and those values will not and can not cannot be shaken by this attack. Meanwhile, police have mobilized every national police resource to respond to the attack.
