Flip phones are making a comeback. From the resurrection of the Razr to the Samsung Galaxy Fold, it looks like 2019 could be the year of the foldable phone.
2019 Could be the Year of the Foldable Phone
The foldable Razr phone everyone had in their back pocket during the early 2000s is making a big comeback.
Before high-tech smartphones, there was the humble Motorola Razr—an ultra-thin metallic flip phone that everybody had to have. While it seemed like the iconic cell faded into the background when smartphones stole the show, it is not giving up the spotlight so easily.
Verizon and Motorola’s parent company, Lenovo, are planning to revive the Razr brand by releasing a new and improved foldable phone within the year.
From the outside, the Motorola Razr 2019 is going to look like a regular flip phone. But on the inside, it will open to reveal a full, foldable screen.
While they have not disclosed many details on the phone’s features, it is possible that it could cost up to $1,500. In addition, the cellphone could be part of a limited production run of only 200,000 copies.
But Motorola isn’t the only brand looking to introduce a foldable phone to their lineup. It looks like 2019 could be the year of foldable phone thanks to scheduled releases of the Samsung Galaxy Fold, Huawei Mate X, and Oppo Foldable Phone.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold will have a 7.3-inch screen that folds inward like a clamshell. In addition to a triple-lens rear camera, the phone will also feature a high-end processor and supply 512GB of storage.
You can get your hands on this model in April 2019. Similar to the Motorola Razr 2019, it will come with a hefty price tag of $1,980.
For a phone that folds in the opposite direction, keep your eyes peeled for the Huawei Mate X, which the company will release in the summer of 2019. When the phone is open, it is the size of a full-screen 8-inch tablet. When shut, the screen wraps around the outside, allowing you to utilize a screen on both the front and back of the device.
While it offers attractive features like 5G connectivity and a Kirin 980 processor, it is also one of the priciest foldable phones on the market at $2,582.
In light of these upcoming releases, it looks like 2019 really could be the year of the foldable phone.
