PERMANENT SNAPS?
The battle between Snapchat and Instagram has been waging since the release of Instagram Stories in 2016. Could permanent Snapchat stories be the next chapter?
In 2011, Snapchat took the social media world by storm — attracting thousands of users with an interface that allows them to post pictures and videos that disappear after 24 hours. However, the company is now struggling to keep its customers thanks to competition from similar platforms.
Due to the app’s initial popularity, other social media platforms like Instagram began to imitate Snapchat with features like Instagram Stories in 2016. The battle between Snapchat and Instagram Stories has been waging ever since, as the nearly-identical platforms attempt to attract the attention of their similar audiences.
Currently, Instagram Stories offers certain features which are unavailable on Snapchat, such as the ability to add music or implement a rewind option. Such attractive features could be the reason why Instagram Stories currently has over twice as many users as Snapchat, according to CNBC.
However, it’s clear that Snapchat is not giving up. In order to set themselves apart from Instagram, they’re planning to make user’s public posts last longer or perhaps, even make them permanent.
While stories shared under the “Our Story” section previously would disappear after 30 days, users can now view them up to 90 days after they’re posted. According to Reuter’s, there have even been reports that the Snapchat app decision-makers are considering further increasing the duration of public posts and making some celebrity content permanent.
In addition to setting themselves apart from Instagram Stories, the change would also help Snapchat potentially earn more advertising revenue thanks to the increased periods of viewability.
Users worried about the effect this change will have on their privacy should know that the adjustment will only impact content shared publicly on the “Our Story” section. There will be no impact on stories shared on “My Story” (which are exclusively visible to a user’s friends). Users will also maintain the option to delete their stories whenever they choose, regardless of when or where they share them.
Many fans of Snapchat are looking forward to seeing the new features that are sure to come out of the battle between Snapchat and Instagram.
