The Waukegan Fire Department firefighters responded about 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 14, 2019 to a report of an inside natural gas odor at the Lake County Building, 18 North County Street. The Lake County Building located near Cook Street and Washington Street was evacuated for a short time as a precaution.
Shortly after arriving, firefighters received calls from Lake County personnel reporting a gas odor at both the new Lake County Circuit Court tower on the south side of Washington Street and nearby at Waukegan City Hall.
Waukegan Battalion Chief and Fire Marshal Steven Lenzi said air systems might have brought the smell from outside into the buildings.
Firefighters found no elevated gas levels inside the building, but North Shore Gas officials were conducting a more thorough investigation.
