ICE STORM LIKELY TO INVOLVE TRAVEL HAZARDS AND POSSIBLE DOWNED POWER LINE AND TREE DAMAGE HAZARDS
Arlington Heights and surrounding northwest suburbs are at the center of an Ice Storm Warning zone (Tuesday Feb. 5 to Wednesday Feb. 6, 2019) that ranges from the Illinois-Wisconsin border to the north, and includes all of Will County, Grundy County and LaSalle county to the south. The forecast of the impact of an ice storm is difficult because of multiple factors, including prediction of precise temperatures, road temperatures, traffic congestion, and the duration of freezing rain. Freezing rain is expected to start about 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Arlington Heights. Ice accumulation is expected to total 0.21 inch by midnight and another 0.12 by 5:00 a.m. for a total of 0.33 inch by 5:00 a.m.
Winds are forecast to be gusty at 20 MPH from the northeast until about 8:00 p.m. and then drop to 15 MPH until midnight Tuesday/Wednesday. The winds could have an impact on iced power lines (causing power outages), but not to the extreme. A Northeast wind gust of 25 MPH was reported about 3:51 p.m. Tuesday.
Some lightning and thunder is possible between 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
Weather Radar (also nexrad.chgowx.com) showed a line of freezing rain from a line from east of Decatur and Peoria to northwest Illinois near Galena at 3:30 p.m. The line was just approaching western McHenry County, southwest Kane County and Will County at 4:30 p.m.
4:30 pm temperatures with regard to freezing, which have inched down for much of northern IL the past two hours. Readings are likely to drop or hold steady these next few hours, then very slowly inch warmer from the south into the overnight. https://t.co/hvAEYCJelM #ILwx #INwx pic.twitter.com/qO7GdEMTNy
