White House press secretary Sarah Sanders releases a statement that U.S. and North Korean teams ‘look forward to meeting in the future.’
President Donald J. Trump abruptly walked away from negotiations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Vietnam at the Hanoi Summit (DPRK-USA Hanoi Summit Vietnam). The President of the United States headed back to Washington D.C. on Thursday afternoon February 28, 2019 from Hanoi, Vietnam, saying the U.S. is unwilling to meet Kim’s demand of lifting all sanctions before securing North Korea’s commitment to denuclearization. The summit was cut short and no new agreement was reached.
Trump said negotiations fell through after North Korea demanded a full removal of U.S.-led international sanctions in exchange for the shuttering of the North’s Yongbyon nuclear facility. However, the United States is aware of other secretive nuclear facilities, and President Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters that the United States wasn’t willing to make a deal without North Korea’s commitment to giving up the secretive nuclear facilities outside Yongbyon, and North Korea’s missile and warheads program.
President Donald J. Trump said he trusted Kim’s promise that he would not resume nuclear and missile testing, but that the current U.S. sanctions would stay in place.
(Begins 30:32) The White House has announced that no agreement was reached in Trump’s summit with Kim Jong Un. The President will brief the media before departing Hanoi (entire press conference presented as LIVE stream by Fox News/1:08:51).
