Spring Grove police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2019 the Wisconsin Central railroad tracks to Blivin Street north of Route 12 for a train derailment on the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad line.
The train derailed on the tracks that extend beyond the Metra Milwaukee District-North line (Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad) which ends at Fox Lake from Chicago via Glenview, Northbrook, Deerfield, Libertyville and more. The Metra line was not affected by the freight train derailment, which occurred about 4 miles west of the Fox Lake Metra Train Station.
From aerial views from news helicopters, a Wisconsin & Southern locomotive was visible, and it appeared the derailment may have occurred near a railroad switch to a sidetrack, where some freight cars came to rest very close to a warehouse.
Initially no injuries were reported, and the approximately 13 freight train cars that derailed were reported to be empty.
Spring Grove Police closed Blivin Street between Route 12 and Main Street.
Specialized railroad heavy recovery equipment arrived at the derailment scene about 10:45 a.m. Bliven Street was expected to be closed all of Tuesday.
