Jake Simmons says his mother works at Henry Pratt Co., where a shooting occurred Friday afternoon. She told her son the shooter was an employee at the company and was about to be fired (CBS Chicago’s Dana Koslov reports).
Kristen Ziman, Chief of Police of Aurora Police Department, stated that the Aurora Police Department received multiple calls of an active shooter at 1:24 p.m. at 641 Archer Avenue.
The first police officers on the scene arrived by 1:28 p.m. were fired upon immediately and five police officers were shot. The two police officers were eventually airlifted to Level I Trauma Centers.
Additional police arrived and 5 victims were found dead inside the building. The shooter was still at large inside the warehouse, which is 29,000 square feet.
Police engaged the shooter, and the shooter was shot and killed by police.
The shooter was identified as Gary Martin, age 45, believed to be an employee of the company, described as the Henry Pratt Co.
A sixth officer was treated for a knee injury.
The Illinois State Police, FBI, Metra police and numerous nearby local municipality police agencies and fire agencies responded to the scene.
At about 6:00 p.m. police detectives were beginning to investigate Gary Martin’s apartment, utilizing a robot as a precaution in case the apartment contained any booby traps.
Alro Steel is listed as the business at 641 Archer Avenue. The Henry Pratt Co. is listed with a business address of 401 South Highland Avenue, which is just south of the Alro Steel-listed address. The armored police vehicles, the police activity, the outdoor police tape and crime scene activity appeared to be closer to the larger warehouse listed as the Alro Steel building. The discrepancy of the information was not clarified at the initial press conference. It was initially unknown whether the Henry Pratt Co. has some facilities in the Alro Steel warehouse building.
