BUFFALO GROVE, LONG GROVE, LAKE COUNTY AND MCHENRY COUNTIES ARE IN A WINTER STORM WARNING ZONE
Intense snowfall at a rate of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour is expected overnight Sunday/Monday for Arlington Heights and nearby communities. Snow may begin as early as 8:00 p.m. Sunday January 27, 2019 with intense snowfall rates expected to begin about 11:00 p.m. and continue until 9:00 a.m. Monday. Light flurries may continue from 10:00 a.m. Monday until 11:00 p.m. Monday. High winds about 30 MPH are also forecast from about midnight Sunday/Monday until 9:00 p.m. Monday. A total of 6.8 inches snow depth is forecast for the period between 8:00 p.m. Sunday and 11:00 p.m. Monday. The snow is expected to be wet and heavy with a Snow Ratio of 10:1. Temperatures will be climbing during the intense snowfall rate period from 16°F at 11:00 p.m. Sunday to 33°F at 9:00 a.m. Monday.
Temperatures will fall Sunday afternoon to about 7°F at 6:00 p.m. and then climb overnight Sunday/Monday and reach a high of 33°F from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday. Temperatures will then fall Monday and overnight Monday/Tuesday, reaching 0°F about 7:00 am. Tuesday. Tuesday’s high is forecast at 3°F from noon to 1:00 p.m.; then Chicagoland will fall into extreme record cold territory.
Dangerous cold weather extremes will begin Tuesday as the temperatures will reach -9°F with a wind chill of -32°F by 9:00 p.m. Temperatures will fall overnight Tuesday/Wednesday to about -22°F from about 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. The all-time (all days) official record low for Chicago is -27°F. Some forecasts have indicated Chicago could reach -27°F Wednesday morning. Wind chill may reach -50°F with winds at 25-28 MPH. The NWS-forecasted high for Wednesday is -15°F from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., which would be an all-time record low for a high temperature for Chicago.
Thursday’s morning low may reach -21°F from 3:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. Thursday is forecast to reach 0°F at 2:00 p.m. and then continued to climb to a high in the 20s on Friday. The weekend may be in the 40s.

Tonight: Snow, mainly after 11pm. The snow could be heavy at times. Patchy blowing snow after 11pm. Temperature rising to around 27 by 5am. Wind chill values as low as -7. Breezy, with a southeast wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.
Monday: Drizzle and snow, possibly mixed with freezing drizzle before noon, then a chance of snow and freezing drizzle between noon and 2pm, then a chance of snow after 2pm. Patchy blowing snow before 8am. Temperature rising to near 33 by 9am, then falling to around 18 during the remainder of the day. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 20 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.
