NEXT WEEK, CHICAGO COULD BE NEAR A RECORD LOW HIGH TEMPERATURE ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2019
Very cold temperatures are forecast to reach -6°F from 7 AM to 8 AM Friday, January 25, 2019 with a Wind Chill of -21 to -24 from 3AM to 7 AM Friday morning. Falling temperatures passed zero about midnight Thursday/Friday. Chicago hasn’t been below zero since February 5, 2018. About a half-inch to an inch or less of snow is forecast for 3PM to 10PM Friday in Arlington Heights and the northwest suburbs. Gusty winds will diminish about 5 PM Friday after having peaked to 30-35 MPH around 11 PM Thursday night.
Outlook for Significant Snow and Dangerous Cold
In the long range forecast, a significant snow event is possible Sunday night through Monday night, followed by temperatures of -14°F to -15°F early morning Wednesday and early morning Thursday with a high of only -3°F on Wednesday and a high of only 1°F on Thursday. If this forecast comes true for Wednesday and Thursday next week, we’ll be in a cold zone for the lowest high temperatures. Cold high temperatures in this zone haven’t been observed since January 4, 1994 (-4°F), January 18, 1994 (-11°F) and February 3, 1996 (-5°F). January 18, 1994’s temperature of -11°F also occurred on December 24, 1983 — the two dates tying the all-time record low high temperature. Therefore we would also be near the all-time record low high temperature if the forecast for Wednesday comes true next week. The all-time record low temperature for Chicago is -27°F on January 20, 1985.
