Cook County Crime Stoppers is now offering a reward of $1,000 in addition to $10,000 offered by the Belogur family.
The Belogur family is offering a $10,000 reward, and the Cook County Crime Stoppers is now offering a reward of $1,000 in addition to Belogur family reward for a total of $11,000 for information leading to the arrest of the hit-and-run offender responsible for the death of Leonid Belogur.
LEONID BELOGUR; ANOTHER SENIOR CITIZEN PEDESTRIAN KILLED BY A VEHICLE IN THE NILES/MORTON GROVE AREA
An 86-year-old man was killed Friday night in a hit-and-run in Morton Grove, according to police.
Morton Grove police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:18 p.m. Friday January 4, 2019 after Leonid Belogur, age 86, was hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Shermer Road and Greenwood Avenue. According to Morton Grove police the incident is believed to have occurred between 5:02 p.m. and 5:18 p.m.
Police and firefighter/paramedics upon arrival discovered that the 86-year-old man was fatally struck by a vehicle. Belogur was killed while walking at the intersection of Shermer Road and Greenwood Avenue, and the driver fled the scene with the offending vehicle.
During rescue and investigation Morton Grove police closed Shermer between Dempster and Harlem. Also, Greenwood, Shermer and Enfield were closed a block or two in each direction for several hours.
Greenwood Avenue is controlled by stop signs in both directions. Shermer Road does not have stop signs. The oblique intersection is located in a residential neighborhood, and is dark after sunset without adequate lighting, according to neighbors. The Speed Limit on Shermer Road is 30 MPH, but includes a 20 MPH School Speed Zone.
Greenwood Avenue is marked by “Avenue” on street signs, but Google maps indicates it is Greenwood Street in Morton Grove. Greenwood Avenue also has School Speed Zone 20 MPH signs for Hynes Elementary School located nearby.
The fatal crime scene was located about 2 miles east of the location of another fatal vehicle vs pedestrian that occurred at Greenwood Road and Betty Terrace in Niles on Thursday, December 27, 2018. That incident was initially reported as a hit-and-run, but when the offending driver that had stayed at the scene admitted he was the driver that hit the man, the incident was re-classified. Greenwood Avenue is an east/west roadway in Morton Grove and Greenwood Road is a north/south roadway in Niles. They are two different streets.
The NORTAF Major Crash Assistance Team is assisting Morton Grove Police Department with the crash investigation. Police have not provided any description of the vehicle suspected of being involved in the crash.
Morton Grove police are looking for witnesses, and initially have not provided any vehicle or suspect description. Morton Grove police are urging any citizen that may have been in the area between 5 p.m. and 5:20 p.m. and who witnessed the incident to contact the Morton Grove Police Department at 847-470-5200.
