Naperville police and firefighter/paramedics responded at 4:49 p.m. Sunday January 13, 2018 to the block of 1300 McDowell Road on to a report of a boy who fell through ice at a retention pond.
A firefighter in a special cold exposure protection suit for water rescues helped the the 11-year-old child to the shoreline of the retention pond in northern Naperville.
According to Naperville police, rescuers responded to a 9-1-1 call from a neighbor who reported that a child had fallen through the ice.
Fire and police officers arrived on the scene within four minutes of the call, and began a rescue operation. The boy was able to tell rescue workers that his feet were stuck in the mud at the bottom of the pond, and divers were able to rescue him from the water within four minutes.
The boy was transported to Edward Hospital by Naperville firefighter/paramedics, where he was listed in stable condition. No other residents or citizens were injured, and no firefighters or police officers were injured during the rescue operation. Firefighters and divers are typically assess for normal vital signs, and are decontaminated after entering bodies of water.
Two battalion chiefs, a chief, two engine crews, two rescue ambulance crews, two ladder truck crews and a water rescue crew responded to the incident.
