Wheeling Bicyclist, Age 82, Killed Crossing Elmhurst Rd at Prospect Heights Bike Bath in Prospect Heights

Major Case Assistance Team/Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (MCAT/STAR) investigators on the scene after an large GMC SUV crashed with a bicyclist.

Prospect Heights and Wheeling police officers and Prospect Heights FPD firefighter/paramedics responded about 12:36 p.m. to the southbound lanes of Elmhurst Road after man on a bicycle was hit by a large GMC SUV.

After the crash and during the investigation, the bicycle was down in the curb lane of southbound Elmhurst Road, and the GMC that hit the bicyclist was stopped in the southbound center lane. The SUV had significant moderate damage at the front end of the vehicle.

The first police officer on the scene administered CPR, and Prospect Heights firefighter/paramedics took over with Advanced Life Support. The ambulance crew transported the man with the assistance of the Prospect Heights rescue squad crew by about 12:45 p.m. to Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview, where he was pronounced dead.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office on Tuesday morning released the identity of the man killed as 82-year-old Fridrikh Golod, a resident at the Sandpebble Walk condominiums in Wheeling — less than one-half mile east of the crash.

Police continued to work at the scene and requested the assistance of the Major Case Assistance Team’s Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction unit (MCAT/STAR). The southbound lanes of Elmhurst Road were closed for several hours during the investigation. Northbound lanes were closed for a short time intermittently.

The Speed Limit on Elmhurst Road at the site of the crash was about 1,000 feet north of Palatine Road is 40 MPH.
