Round Lake police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:00 p.m. Tuesday December 11, 2018 to a home in the block of 600 Nippersink Road in Round Lake to a report of a disturbance in progress with shots fired.
Upon arrival police discovered a woman that appeared to be in her 20s with a significant gunshot wound to the head. The woman, who is pregnant, was transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. She was reported to be in grave condition.
Round Lake police secured the scene, and were able to find all of the people who were in the home when the woman was shot.
Sgt. Christopher Covelli, a spokesman for the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, said police have a person of interest in custody but declined to identify any suspects.
Covelli said there was no risk to the area at large.
Round Lake police requested the aid of the Major Crimes Task Force, and investigators responded to the scene to work with Round Lake police detectives.
The shooting on Nippersink Road near Cedar Lake Road prompted a soft lockdown at two nearby Round Lake Area Unit School District 116 buildings just west of the crime scene: Round Lake Village Elementary School, located at 880 West Nippersink Road, and Round Lake Early Education Center, located 882 West Nippersink Road. The soft lockdown was activated for about 30 minutes, beginning about 2:00 p.m., no one was allowed to enter or leave the school buildings, but classes and activities were not significantly interrupted, according to a school official.
