Fire command activated a MABAS Box Alarm #13-36 for the apartment fire at 7:58 p.m. Initially the address for the alarm was specified as 4350 Finch Court, but the address was corrected to 545 Gillings Drive. The Box Alarm brought mutual aid firefighters from Fox Lake, Grayslake, Lake Villa, Libertyville, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Long Grove, Mundelein, Newport Township, Round Lake, and Zion.
More than a dozen people were displaced without injuries, but a cat perished in the apartment fire. The building involved was an eight-unit apartment building.
There was heavy smoke and water damage throughout the building, which has two basement apartments and three apartment units on two floors above the basement.
The Red Cross was not requested at the scene because the company that owns the apartment building was helpful in accommodating residents with temporary shelter in other empty apartments that the company owns. The company is also helping the affected residents with long-term living arrangements, according to Gurnee Fire Department.
The apartment fire is under investigation.
