Vernon Hills police responded about 1:38 a.m. Saturday September 15, 2018 to a report of a domestic dispute call in the block of 100 Marimac Lane. On arrival a police officer encountered a man armed with a rifle standing inside the garage. Marimac Lane is a small street just north of the intersection of Route 45 and Deerpath.
The Lake County Major Crime Task Force issued a press release by 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning. According to Chris Covelli, spokesman for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, an officer arrived and encountered a man armed with a rifle inside the garage, and during the encounter the police officer engaged the man and fired at him. The man was struck and subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.
The officer was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and released — a standard procedure in police-involved shootings. Task force investigators will likely interview him the week of Monday September 17, 2018, according to Covelli.
Although one neighbor stated the street is very quiet, Covelli reported the address has a history where Vernon Hills police have been called to the house on numerous occasions throughout the years. Several of the calls included domestic-related incidents.
In a police-involved shooting in Lake County, standard operating procedures dictate the Lake County Major Crime Task Force independently investigates the shooting.
The dead man’s identity is expected to be released by Sunday. An autopsy by The Lake County coroner’s office is scheduled for Monday morning, September 17, 2018.
In a police-involved shooting, police officers’ names typically are not released until the state’s attorney’s office issues the official finding on the incident.
Three neighbors outside in the neighborhood Saturday morning about 9:00 a.m. said they did not hear anything or experience anything that indicated there was a shooting.
In an article published by Barbara Vitello and Justin Kmitch, the Daily Herald reported one person who stated they were awakened by the sound of gunshots, and saw police squad cars, ambulances and a fire truck at the scene.
Police tape was removed by 9:00 a.m., and there were no signs that anything had happened in the neighborhood of Marimac Lane between Deerpath Drive and Monterey Drive.
