They came to pay their respects and honor a great Chicago Blackhawk who passed away earlier this week. CBS 2’s Jim Williams reports on the visitation of #21 Stan Mikita.
Sunday August 12, 2018 in the United Center atrium, Stan Mikita’s coffin was draped with his sweater and a large arrangement of red and white flowers honoring his number. Longtime fans wanted to pay their respects to wonderful man, and said they wanted to let Mikita’s family know that he was loved and adored.
NHL Forward Stan Mikita was with the Blackhawks for 22 years from 1958 to 1980, and is the franchise leader in points (1,467) and games played (1,394). Stan Mikita is a four-time Art Ross Trophy winner as the NHL’s leading scorer, and was the Hart Trophy winner for league MVP in the 1966-1967 and 1967-1968 seasons. In those same years, Mikita was also named the Lady Byng Trophy winner for sportsmanlike conduct.
Immediately after his retirement in 1980, the Blackhawks retired his No. 21 in October. Mikita was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983. He served as an ambassador for the Chicago Blackhawks starting in 2008. In fall of 2011, the Blackhawks raised a statue honouring Mikita at Gate 3½ at Chicago’s United Center
