The kayakers had launched from Park Avenue Beach in Highland Park. Witnesses at the boat launch said experienced boaters advised the two men against using small kayaks to head out into Lake Michigan open waters — especially without Life Jackets.
More severe conditions of winds and waves are often not visible from shore.
