According to Illinois State police, the driver of a black car drove up alongside a white GMC SUV in the outbound (southbound) Dan Ryan express lanes near Garfield Boulevard when someone inside the black car started shooting at the white SUV. The driver of the black car fled the scene after shooting. A white GMC Acadia SUV — apparently the victims’ vehicle — was stopped in the left lane or left shoulder near the center tracks under the Garfield Boulevard overpass and between the eastbound and westbound lanes of Garfield Boulevard. The SUV appeared to have impacted the center wall at slow speed with minor damage to the driver’s side and airbags deployed.
The southbound express lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway remained closed just north of 47th Street at about 45th Street after sunrise, but all lanes were open by 8:00 a.m.
CTA Red Line trains were also delayed due to earlier shutdown of train service related to investigation of the shooting.
