The Wauconda Fire District responded at 3:46 a.m. Saturday August 4, 2018 to a report of a fire in the basement of a single-family home at 26870 North Genesee Street.
Six people inside the house made were evacuated before firefighters arrived. A cat perished in the fire, and the American Red Cross is working with the occupants to find shelter.
The fire was declared under control by about 4:30 a.m. Preliminary investigation indicates the fire started in a basement bedroom in the east end of the basement, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The house is uninhabitable, and damage is estimated at $200,000.
