Libertyville firefighter/paramedics and Lake County Sheriff’s deputies initially responded about 11:45 a.m. Saturday August 11, 2018 to a report that a person fell in the water at Independence Grove Forest Preserve, 16400 W Buckley Road in Libertyville. Firefighters quickly discovered that a 25 year-old fisherman was underwater, but not in sight. The incident occurred in the far northwest part of the forest preserve and lake.
Libertyville Fire Department responded to the scene with divers and support personnel, and in about 10 minutes requested assistance from neighboring fire/rescue agencies.
A MABAS Division 4 Box Alarm on Box #46-61 for a water rescue at Independence Grove Forest Preserve was activated about 11:56 a.m., requesting additional divers and other specialized equipment , such as Side Scan Sonar to assist in the rescue efforts. Personnel and equiment from over 20 fire departments from the surrounding communities responded to assist Libertyville firefighters. Public safety members from the Lake County Forest Preserve also responded.
Libertyville Fire Department reported in a press release that many resources were needed to locate and remove the subject from the water because of the depth, topography, and debris in the water. The fisherman was removed from the water at approximately 4:10 p.m. Saturday. His body was transferred to the Lake County Coroner’s office.
