Hanover Park police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:58 PM Sunday August 5, 2018 to a report of a garage fire with explosion at 8072 Applewood Court South Hanover Park, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that the fire was in a garage. While responding, firefighters were also updated at 11:00 p.m. that a car was on fire and exploding.
A photo posted in the Daily Herald’s Everything Schaumburg Facebook group showed flames rising at least twice the height of the garage roof.
Battalion Chief 16 on arrival reported a fully-involved house fire with an exposure next door.
Firefighters attacked the garage fire with a 2 1/2-inch line, and checked for extension to the house. Fire was found in the front and the back of the house.
The garage and at least one vehicle inside were destroyed. Firefighters were able to stop the attached garage fire from destroying the house.
Streamwood Truck 32’s crew was assigned RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) while interior crews were conducting a primary search, which was negative on all floors by about 11:13 p.m.
A second hose line was also working by 11:13 p.m. Squad 27’s crew was assigned the secondary search by 11:15 p.m.
The fire was declared under control by about 11:18 p.m. Firefighters also rescued two dogs by about 11:20 p.m. The information about the condition of the dogs was not initially known.
Companies were also working overhaul by about 11:20 p.m. and had some hot spots to extinguish above the kitchen. Smoke coming from the house was significantly reduced by about 11:20 p.m.
Engine 64’s crew was conducting a secondary search in the basement and the secondary search was complete and negative by about 11:22 p.m.
Command started releasing fire crews from staging by about 11:23 p.m. Some working companies were preparing for release from the scene about 11:30 p.m.
The exterior of a neighboring house was damaged with melted siding. Initially it was unknown if the explosion damaged the primary fire house or the neighbor’s house.
Firefighters from Carol Stream, Itasca, Roselle and Streamwood assisted Hanover Park firefighters.
Initially no injuries were reported, but this is an early report, not confirmed by officials.
