Blue Island firefighters responded just before 2:50 a.m. Friday August 24, 2018 to the Maple Tree Inn Restaurant at 13301 South Olde Western Avenue, in Blue Island’s historic district.
The fire is believed to have started in the historic and highly-rated Cajun and Creole restaurant, where the fire extended to a second-floor apartment. A co-owner’s family, living above the restaurant, were able to escape to safety. No serious injuries were reported.
The fire was extinguished by about 5:00 a.m. but a flame from a ruptured gas line at the scene continued to burn after the main body of fire was extinguished. Firefighters with a main aerial ladder from a Calumet Park Fire Department truck were working on the steep-angled roof.
Firefighters from Calumet Park, Chicago, Evergreen Park, Orland Park, Palos Heights, Robbins, South Holland and other communities provided mutual aid to Blue Island firefighters at the scene.
