Naperville Ribfest officials temporarily shut down the festival at about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday July 4, 2018 for a lightning precaution. A single severe thunderstorm cell developed over Kendall County about 5:30 p.m. and moved southwest to northeast into northwest Will County where it dissipated, and did not cross into DuPage County at the border at 87th Street. Ribfest is located at West Street and Martin Avenue about 2 miles north of 87th Street.
UPDATE: Naperville Ribfest closed a second time about 8:40 p.m. because of severe weather in the area.
UPDATE: Ribfest re-opened Wednesday night with musical acts and fireworks delayed. Melissa Etheridge began performing about 7:40 p.m., followed by Stray Cats and fireworks — all delayed from the original schedule.
A lightning strike hit two people in Sheridan, Illinois about 30 miles southwest of Naperville about the time Naperville was getting prepared to re-open Ribfest. At least one person may have suffered life-threatening injuries at the site of Sheridan’s fireworks, just over an hour before fireworks were scheduled to begin.
Please re-tweet. Park will re-open at 7:30pm. VOLUNTEERS report to volunteer tent now. North Park will be free general admission and free front of stage. Fireworks will be at 10PM. Entertainment information soon. Please re-tweet.

Weather radar shows a line of instability with thunderstorm development along I-80 from Chicago to the Iowa border. Officials are probably waiting to see if the line by I-80, which is moving north at about 10-15 mph will dissipate before or if it reaches Naperville. Storms are forecast to dissipate in the night time hours and be out of the area by 8:00 p.m.
Melissa Etheridge was scheduled to perform at 5:30 p.m. and Stray Cats are scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m.
Ribfest officials posted the following message on Facebook …
“The park is closed. Volunteers to Naperville Central HS. We expect the storm to pass quickly. Seek shelter. Tents are not shelter. We hope to re-open; stay nearby!!!! Naperville Central HS IS OPEN!!!!”
