Wheeling police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:04 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2018 to a report of a crash with extrication at Hintz Road and Milwaukee Avenue. Wheeling’s Ambulance 42’s crew was in the area about a quarter-mile south of the scene, and was first to arrive. Wheeling Battalion Chief 23 on arrival reported three vehicles involved with heavy damage.
Three people were removed from their vehicles with multiple extrication operations. Lincolnshire Squad 51’s crew was immediately requested to the scene because of the need of extra extrication crews. A fourth and fifth ambulance were requested to the scene by 2:13 p.m. with Northbrook Ambulance 10 and Mount Prospect Ambulance 14 assigned. A sixth ambulance was requested to the scene by 2:24 p.m. with Arlington Heights Ambulance 4 assigned. Six people were transported to area hospitals.
A 16 year-old girl died as the result of her injuries, and two people suffered critical injuries. The identity of the 16-year-old girl who died was not immediately disclosed, but was released Sunday. Alyssa Lendino, age 16, was pronounced dead at Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge at 5:21 p.m. Saturday.
The cause of the crash is being investigated.
