McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies and Harvard Protection District firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:30 a.m. Friday July 13, 2018 to a head-on crash early Friday morning involving a car and a semi-trailer tractor on Illinois Highway 23 in Dunham Township
First responders arrived to find that a 2003 Toyota Prius heading northbound on Illinois Highway 23 crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a 2016 Freightliner Cascadia. According to a McHenry County Sheriff’s news release, the reason for the Prius crossing the center line is unknown. Both the driver and the passenger of the Toyota Prius were killed.
A 48-year-old man, who was driving the Toyota Prius, and an 18-year-old male passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities were not immediately released.
The driver of the Freightliner, a 57-year-old woman from Cross Plains, Wisconsin, did not initially report any injuries.
Both drivers and the passenger were wearing seat belts and air bags deployed in the Toyota Prius, according to McHenry County sheriff
Route 23 was shut down for about seven hours for an extended crash investigation. IL-23 is a two-lane rural highway throughout Dunham Township.
