Grill fire extends into condo unit and destroys interior of the unit on the first floor Colony Country Condos in Mount Prospect.
Mount Prospect police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:19 PM Friday July 20, 2018 to a report of an apartment/condo fire at Colony County Condos, 1400 Yarmouth Pl Mount Prospect, Il. Firefighter/paramedics on arrival reported nothing showing, but people outside reported a fire inside. Prospect Heights Engine 9’s crew reported a confirmed fire and went offensive with a skid load in the front.;
Ambulance 13’s crew reported an apartment unit fully-engulfed in the back of the building. Engine 13’s crew pulled around the back and knocked down the fire on the first floor patio/balcony, while Prospect Heights Engine 9’s crew worked interior in a first floor condo unit from the front of the building.
An interior crew initially reported no fire extension, but eventually it was determined that four other units were damaged.
A crew found two patients and requested three more ambulances by 6:24 p.m.
The fire was declared out by 6:36 p.m.
One witness, who didn’t want to be identified said a man who was cooking at his grill noticed he accidentally locked himself out, and couldn’t get to a fire extinguisher when he rushed to get the extinguisher. The fire spread quickly, affecting a living room, kitchen, and bedroom. The walls were blacked inside the unit.
John Hersey High School golfer Henry Quinn witnessed the fire while he was golfing at Old Orchard Golf Course. He was about to tee off on the 7th hole when one of his friends that he was golfing with noticed the commotion, saying, “I hear something over there.”
Then they noticed the fire and called 911. Quinn said the fire was huge, and he heard hissing — like gas hissing.
All the residents were displaced from the 74-unit building immediately after the fire, but most were preparing to return to their condo units one air quality was improved by ventilation in the building. Residents waited in the clubhouse while they were evacuated. The exact number of people that will be displaced longer than tonight was not immediately known.
Mount Prospect firefighters and fire officers helped the evacuated residents get comfortable in the clubhouse, and explained the fire and immediate plans going forward.
