Police say a serial arsonist is lighting garages on fire in the Hegewisch neighborhood.
Police are looking for a serial arsonist in the Hegewisch neighborhood on Chicago’s on the far south side. The garages have been targeted for the past two weeks.
Police are warning neighbors to be on the lookout for a person carrying gas can or a person pushing object, such as trash receptacles against the garage. Recycling and trash bins have been set on fire near garages to catch the garages on fire.

The Hegewisch neighborhood is located on the far south side of Chicago near northwest Indiana and a little over three miles south of the Chicago Skyway.
Hegewisch was originally a Polish American community with new groups arrive starting in the 1960s. Greek, Jordanian and Mexican immigrants began to settle in the area beginning in the 1960s. In the 2000s, Latinos represented the dominant immigration. The Latino population grew from 2,820 in 2000 to 4,887 in 2014 to become the majority population in Hegewisch.
