Overnight, a large, mature Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) — a group of thunderstorms in one complex — extended from north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin to south of Danville, Illinois and moved into Arlington Heights and the northwest suburbs about 3:00 a.m. The MCS passed about half way through its width at 5:00 a.m., dropping 3/8 inch of rain. By 9:00 am. 1/2 inch of rain fell in central Arlington Heights. At 5:10 a.m. there were no flood warnings, watches, or advisories in northeast Illinois, but there was a Flash Flood Watch and a Flood Advisory in some counties in northwest Illinois until 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., respectively. A Flash Flood Watch remained in effect until 10:00 a.m. for La Salle, Lee, Ogle, and Winnebago in north central Illinois.
A chance of scattered thunderstorms remains for the day Sunday, but the overall chance of getting hit by a scattered thunderstorm over northern Illinois has been reduced from 60% to 50%. Almost 3/4 inch or rain or more in locally heavy thunderstorms is still possible today in Arlington Heights or the northwest suburbs. Also very light rain might linger in the area. In the northwest suburbs, cloud cover is forecast to remain about 90% or higher, and relative humidity is forecast hold from about 49% to 43%. A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect of the waters of the southern half of Lake Michigan (Arlingtoncardinal.com/LakeMichigan).
No MCS was observed on Weather Radar in northern Illinois at 9:30 a.m., but two very small cells were on target to move eastward just south of the Lake Cook border from about 9:50 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. No thunder was heard with these two small cells. At 9:30 a.m. weather radar also showed scattered storms building and diminishing as they moved eastward across northern Illinois. Correlating the overnight rainfall, at 5:00 a.m. Weather Radar (also nexrad.chgowx.com) showed a large MCS heading east with the trailing edge of the front line of thunderstorms leaving the area for light rain. The back end of the entire MCS was developing another cell that was on target for Arlington Heights by about 5:30 a.m.
