Critical fire weather conditions have continued across much of the Chicagoland forecast area late this morning and this afternoon. South winds have been gusting 20 to 25 mph, and infrequently to 30 mph across the northwest area of Chicagoland.
Red Flag Warning in effect from April 30, 12:00 PM CDT until April 30, 08:00 PM CDT
Dew points have struggled to rise through the day with a reading of 16°F at 4:51 a.m. at O’Hare, and a rise to only 25°F (dew point) in the afternoon. Relative Humidity (RH) was only 14% at 2:51 p.m. and 3:51 p.m. at O’Hare.
Several small mulch fires or wood chip fires were reported in the northwest suburbs, including one in front of LA Fitness and one near Arlington Heights Road and Rand Road. Both were extinguished in a short time with only one fire engine on the scene. Libertyville firefighters were dispatched about 3:00 p.m. to a brush fire near St Marys Rd between Oak Trail Drive and Old School Road in the Mettawa/Libertyville area. McHenry firefighters were called to extinguish a fire in a pile of mulch in front of Home Depot on North Richmond Road.

The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Red Flag
Warning for critical fire weather conditions, which is in effect
from noon until 8 PM CDT this evening.
* Affected Area…DuPage, Cook, Grundy, Will, Kankakee and
Livingston.
* 20 Foot Winds…South 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
* Timing…This afternoon and early evening.
* Relative Humidity…As low as 15 to 25 percent.
* Impacts…The combination of strong winds, very low relative
humidity, exceptionally dry fuels, and warm temperatures will
promote extremely dangerous behavior of any fires. Any outdoor
burning is strongly discouraged Today.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now….or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds…low relative humidity…and warm temperatures can
contribute to extreme fire behavior.
