Vernon Hills police reported on their official Facebook page Thursday morning April 5, 2018 that a “teenage prisoner” escaped from the custody of authorities after jumping out of a vehicle at the intersection of Route 21 and Route 60. The escape prompted a soft lockdown at nearby schools in Hawthorn District 73.
Searches were conducted in and around the Hawthorn Mall and other shopping centers in the area.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from nearby police agencies about 8:00 a.m. Thursday. Area police responded, including a Gurnee police K9 unit that assisted with the search.
Community High School District 128 officials, posting on social media, said they did not believe there was “an imminent threat to the residents or businesses of the area,” but were closing the Vernon Hills High School campus as a precaution.
On Friday morning, no official word was announced whether the teen had been located. A Lake County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said any additional information about the incident would be announced by the 19th Judicial Circuit Court in Waukegan.
Information about the suspect — such as whether the suspect was still at large, and a physical description — was restricted because the search involved a juvenile.
