A St. Charles police officer and a suspect were taken to the hospital, after an officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon.

St Charles police responded about 12:03 p.m. Thursday April 26, 2018 to a report of a burglary in progress in the block of 3400 Voltaire Lane on the west side of the city. The caller told 911 he thought someone had broken into his home and allegedly had a gun.

Police on arrival discovered an armed person running toward Renaux Manor Park at Peck Road and Voltaire Lane, attempted to contact the subject, and began efforts to establish a perimeter to contain the subject. St Charles police reported the male subject pointed a gun in their direction and police fired shots. Police said they immediately called paramedics to the scene and began first aid.

Witnesses in the neighborhood said police officers arrived to find the suspect in the street, allegedly firing a gun. At least one person said this is not the first time police officers were called to the neighborhood for the young man’s alleged erratic behavior.

Police said St. Charles Fire Department firefighter/paramedics transported an injured 19 year-old male to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva. Initially his condition was not released, but police said he was later transported to a Level I trauma center for additional treatment.

Police officers involved at the scene were also transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure, and have since been treated and released, according to St Charles Police Department.

Police investigators worked at the scene Thursday afternoon and evening, and asked the public to avoid the area due to the ongoing investigation. St Charles police are also working with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding any criminal charges related to the police-involved shooting.

St Charles on its official Twitter account reported in a tweet that the shooting was an isolated incident and there was no threat to the public.

St. Charles Police worked with St. Charles School District #303 to reroute afternoon school buses from the area.

Illinois State Police are leading the investigation, as usually occurs in a police-involved shooting involving an Illinois city or village.
