Foundation for Defense of Democracies senior counselor John Hannah and “The Coming Collapse of China” author Gordon Chang on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s announcement to suspend its nuclear and long-range missile tests.
North Korea said Saturday, April 20, 2018 that the country has suspended nuclear and long-range missile tests, and plans to close its nuclear test site. North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency said the country will be shifting national focus to improve the country’s economy.
North Korea also vowed to actively engage with regional neighbors and the international community to secure peace in the Korean Peninsula and create an “optimal international environment” to build its economy.
The announcements came days before North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is set to meet South Korean President Moon Jae-in in a border truce village for a rare summit aimed at resolving the nuclear standoff with Pyongyang.
Kim Jong Un and President Donald J. Trump are also expecting to meet in May or June 2018.
President Trump reacted tweeted calling the reports “big progress!”
North Korea has agreed to suspend all Nuclear Tests and close up a major test site. This is very good news for North Korea and the World – big progress! Look forward to our Summit.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 20, 2018
Some analysts are warning that North Korea could be bluffing or has already completed testing and weaponizing its nuclear arms.
