Remember flip phones and candybars? Well, they’re coming back. WSJ’s David Pierce explains how a few upgrades are giving formerly dumb phones advantages that could make iPhone users jealous.
KaiOS is a Linux-based mobile operating system that “merges the power of a smartphone with the affordability of a feature phone”, according KaiOS Technologies, based in San Diego, California.
KaiOS is one of only a handful of mobile operating systems that natively supports popular third-party apps such as Facebook and Twitter. KaiOS is the only OS to do so on feature phones.
Feature phones, by rough definition, have a backlit LCD screen and may have a physical keyboard, which give them more buttons than a basic mobile phone. They also include a microphone; micro USB port; microSD card slot; a rear-facing camera to record video and capture pictures; and GPS. If advanced enough, feature phones will also include a rudimentary app store that will include basic software such as a calculator program, or simple video game.
Feature phones were most popular from about 2000 to 2010, but KaiOS technologies anticipates markets for people who want to get away from the smartphone, or who can’t afford smartphones, or who live in emerging markets.
