Two people escaped an apartment fire in the Park Manor neighborhood when a family cat and kittens were rescued by a neighbor, who handed them to paramedics who administered oxygen to the pets.

Chicago police and firefighters and paramedics responded about 11:58 AM Wednesday April 25, 2018 to a report of an apartment fire at 7142 South Vernon Avenue Chicago, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of an apartment fire, and discovered hoarder conditions at the apartment. upgraded to a Still and Box. Firefighters had some difficulty accessing the fire because of the hoarder conditions.

A neighbor rescued two kittens and a cat from the fire and handed the pets to paramedics, who administered oxygen.

Engine 47’s crew on arrival reported they have a fire and led out with a hose line to the apartment fire on the second floor.

Firefighters raised an aerial to the roof and started a primary search on the second and third floor by 12:03 p.m.

Battalion Chief 19 reported a 3-story ordinary, 30×75, with fire on the second floor, one line led out by Engine 47’s crew to the second floor, one line led out by Engine 54’s to the third floor, and roof operations underway with Truck 30’s crew by 12:04 p.m.

The apartment fire response was upgraded to a Still and Box Alarm by about 12:19 p.m.

A third fire engine was assigned to pull into the alley.

Firefighters had three lines on the fire, and used a snorkel from Squad 5 for an aerial attack of the fire with defensive operations.

Firefighters occasionally shut down the water during the fire to vent the building. Chicago Fire Department reported at 2:00 p.m. that the Still and Box had been struck out.
