Crash injures two Cook County Sheriff’s deputies, wrecks two police cars on eastbound I-90 (Jane Addams Memorial Tollway) just west of Arlington Heights Road.
Elgin firefighter Shay Brill was awarded a Medal of Merit for his actions at a serious crash when he pulled over on I-90 near Arlington Heights on Tuesday night December 5, 2017 while off-duty to help a Cook County sheriff’s deputy who was trapped in his squad car that was hit by DUI driver while he was on scene finishing up after a traffic stop. A second deputy was also injured at the traffic stop when his squad car was also hit.
Brill had been on his way to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran Hospital in Park Ridge about 11:00 p.m. Tuesday after his daughter and son were seriously injured in a crash near Hampshire, where the family lives. His children were initially transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, but his daughter was transferred by helicopter to the trauma center. While on his way to Lutheran General, he witnessed a car speed by him on eastbound I-90 and crash into the two Cook County squad cars, just west of Arlington Heights Road, where the ticketed driver had already left.
