The Village of Arlington of Arlington Heights promoted two fire officers in the Arlington Heights Fire Department to battalion chief, the position responsible for oversight of one of three different 24-hour shifts and initially in command of most fire department incidents, unless a deputy chief or fire chief takes over command at a major incident.
Ron Fraider and John Carpenter were sworn in by Mayor Tom Hayes swore in at this week’s village board meeting. Both, previously fire lieutenants joined the department in 1994 and rose through the ranks from position of firefighters/paramedic. They replace Tom Zerfass, who recently retired, and Andrew Larson, who was promoted in December to deputy chief upon the retirement of Deputy Chief Bernie Lyons.
Battalion Chief Bill Essling has already been serving as battalion chief. When a battalion chief is away from his regular 24-hour shift, a fire lieutenant becomes acting battalion chief for the shift.
Matthew Yegge and Andrew Benkert filled the openings created by the vacancy of Fraider’s and Carpenter’s lieutenant positions.
