Hampshire Fire Protection District firefighter/paramedics and Kane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded about 6:55 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2018 to a report of a barn fire at 44W975 Berner Road in Hampshire. The barn was already fully-involved with fire, and a total loss by the time firefighters arrived, but the worst news was that thirteen Australian Shepherds, including ten puppies were killed in the fire.
The firefighters used a defensive operation to douse water on the barn, which was already a total loss. The fire was knocked by about 7:10 p.m.
The homeowner attempted to rescue the three adult dogs and ten puppies that lived in the barn, but was unable to get the dogs out of the barn. The owner refused medical transportation, but was treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics at the scene, and released.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Kane County Fire Investigative Task Force. Hampshire is located just west of Huntley, mostly south of Interstate 90, and about 10 miles west of Elgin. Firefighters from Huntley and Burlington FPD and several other fire agencies assisted Hampshire FPD firefighters.
