Tech giant Apple with CEO Tim Cook the keynote speaker made a big announcement in Chicago at Lane Tech High School Tuesday, and ABC 7 Chicago interviewed South Middle School Jennifer Smith for her reaction.
On a drizzly March day in Chicago, Apple employees dressed in green and yellow — Lane Tech’s school colors — handed out umbrellas, Apple event access badges/lanyards, and answered questions while they welcomed visitors into the famous school. Visitors took part in a “field trip” Chicago Public Schools students are on spring break.
Inside the school, Apple showed off a new “budget” iPad specifically targeted toward students. The 9.7-inch device — the same size as the traditional iPad — costs $299 for schools and $329 for consumers. Storage for students is expanded from 50 GB for regular consumers to 200 GB for students using an Apple iCloud with a school-managed Apple id account. Pre-orders start on Tuesday.
Updated iWork apps are also available today. All of the iWork apps for iOS (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote) are now compatible with the Apple Pencil for use with iPad Pro models and the new sixth-generation iPad announced today. The first Apple iPad was released on April 3, 2010.
In all three apps, users can draw and write with the Apple Pencil and use it as a pointer/selector for navigational purposes. In Pages, there’s a Smart Annotation (beta) that’s designed to allow you to use the Apple Pencil to add comments and marks to a Pages document, and you can add Apple Pencil drawings.

Pages can be exported to documents in EPUB format (extension .epub) so the documents can be read using iBooks on an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or with other third-party EPUB readers. EPUB is an open digital book (eBook) standard from the International Digital Publishing Forum. EPUB is also widely used on software readers such as Google Play Books on Android, but not by Amazon Kindle e-readers. The Verge: Rather than the usual California-based event in March, Apple took its team to Chicago in 2018 to make its spring announcements, most of which revolved around a new iPad geared toward the education market.
In October 2017, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook applauded Emanuel’s efforts to require all CPS students to take a coding class.
