POSSIBLE MULTIPLE FATALITIES, AT LEAST 20 INJURED

Broward County Sheriff’s deputies and Coral Springs police and area firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:30 p.m. ET Wednesday February 14, 2018 to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, 5901 Pine Island Road in Parkland, Florida to a report of a mass shooting and active shooter.

At least two medical transport helicopters were seen in landing zones on the high school’s athletic field.

Aerial video from WSVN showed a number of people down on the ground outside the school, being treated for injuries and transferred to ambulances. Several students were also able to walk to ambulance.

Officials have confirmed one fatality, but unofficial reports have stated there are multiple deaths.

Broward County Sheriff’s Office declared a suspect was in custody at 3:11 p.m. ET.

An aerial view from WSVN also showed a male/white subject, apparently in his upper teens or lower 20s with brown hair, that was handcuffed with his hands behind his back. He was wearing a cranberry red-colored shirt with a white emblem over his left chest.

As students exited the high school — instructed to keep their hands over their heads in an orderly single line — some ran from the school.

ATF and FBI agents and law enforcement and firefighter/paramedics from multiple nearby communities also responded to the scene.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel spoke about 4:55 p.m. ET, stating that the suspect was a former student, and that he was an active shooter inside and outside the school.

The shooter gained access to the third floor where freshman were in classes. The high school has three floors.

At the outdoor press conference, Sheriff Scott Israel said there were multiple fatalities.

Sheriff Scott Israel said the suspect was arrested without incident, possibly in Coral Springs, which is just south of Parkland. Sheriff Scott Israel said he thought the suspect was about 18 years-old.

Fourteen people were transported to area hospitals. Victims are known to have been transported to Broward Health Medical Center and North Broward Hospital.

A fire drill was held earlier in the day, which caused confusion because initially students thought the actual active shooter situation was part of the initial fire drill.

The Miami Herald has cited law enforcement sources saying the suspect is former student Nicolas de Jesus Cruz, who captured in a townhouse at Pelican Pointe at Wyndham Lakes in Coral Springs.
